Off Track

For me, the weekend started on Wednesday, when I drove down from Pittsburgh to my parent's house in Northern VA. There, I put on my Panther plus brake pads, and the falken azenis all around...friday morning, I met up with George Knighton and Zygspeed, fellow Type R owners in Northern VA. I bought my Steelies from Zyg, and George coordinated the Honda-Tech side of this event, bringing together a great many Type R and other honda owners. Down 66 we went, and on to 28...On 66, Zygspeed had me convinced he was a crackhead until i realized he was bedding in his brakes...why else would he accelerate to 100 MPH, nearly rear-end me, and then brake and fade back into the distance, over and over again? He drives like a dragonfly that has ingested one too many pop-tarts :) We met up with more Honda products (and their drivers) in beautiful Culpeper, VA

And so we formed our little northern VA caravan towards Danville.

The primary lodgings for the VIR crowd is the Innkeeper, where cars were teched in the evening to save time in the morning.

One of our caravan blew a CV joint on the way down, making a gooey mess all over the left front wheel...fortunately, he had time to repair this, better to have it happen on the way down than at the track.

One of two gorgeous cobras at the innkeeper

Merritt's sweet hybrid, and the crowd making appropriate ooohs and aaahs.

If you didn't swap your bumpsticks to Toda Spec B's just for the track, you're a pansy.

yardsale! Anyone want a red valve cover? Cams?

Two local girls, who i absolutely guarentee were 18 years of age or older, came looking for Ceas...who naturally went along for a ride. Someone yelled "Get a picture of Ceas in a mustang!", so i did. The girls were camera shy, Ceas was...not.

My roomate for the evening was Adam, an RSX-S owner from North Carolina...he's a great guy, and he has a unique talent...apparently, he snores on a scale of 9 out of 10 in some study he was in. Let me tell you, it was pretty amazing :) Fortunately, i can sleep through pretty much anything...(side note: Zyg had to leave early the next day, and he couldn't get out of his room in the other building...so i kept his single warm for him on saturday night. I think i still heard Adam snoring across the parking lot though ;) I would have been OK either way, since Warren, my instructor, gave me earplugs for riding in his car, and I was keen on using them to see if Adam snores as loudly as an unmuffled Type R through Earplugs :) )

A chilly morning, and we gather in the VIR paddock

Me, Zyg, and Adam bring tha VTEC.

See if you can count the Phoenix Yellow Type Rs!

Two NSXs were running on the second day, the first day only one showed up, and it was leaky and did not run.

Some handsome red cars.

A pretty angry FD RX7.

Merritt and her Type R-ified civic.

This thing was beyond pissed off.

A Celica ST! Base Model! Running in Advanced! How cool is that, this is my girlfriend's car...well, actually, we're selling it now, we just got her an Integra sedan :)

Those are some very rare socks, imported from japan, apparently...they say Mugen and Spoon, and if you don't know what those are, you don't deserve to have socks on your resevoirs.

The classroom at VIR, which was a great part of the weekend. Learning is fun!

Hey look, it's a Turbo Diesel BMW 5-Series! Wait a minute, I think there's only one 5-series with quad pipes....

Mmmmm....five.....

Some serious GS-Rs (the R is really big for these)

Carbon...fiber...goodness...

Chin Spoiler!

Rear Spoiler!

Red Spoiler!

Cobra, Carbon Fiber body, supercharged V8, rear wing from a Cessna or something. GORGEOUS.

The plate says it all.

My instructor, Warren's car. The side has speed ripples so it goes faster. It is the most awesome Type R I have ever been in (and most of that is because Warren was driving)

Here's the front of Warren's R. It's pretty clean in this picture, read what changed that in the on track section.

Okay, this engine displaces more than 4 Type R engines combined. Good lord.

There were more than 20 Type Rs at this TRACK event! (which rocks!) most of them are in this pic.

The cars and their pilots. Click for HUGE pic.
