SpeedTrial Event
Virginia International Raceway
February 23rd and 24th, 2002

Scott here, unfortunately Matt was unable to attend this event due to exams and being a poor student. As of winter 2001, my track experience consisted of two days at Nelson Ledges, which you can read about elsewhere on this site. NL is a fun, fast course, but as far as tracks go, it's not exactly in the best shape...it's patchy, the facilities aren't quite five-star, and except for one little rise after the kink and a couple of banked turns, it's flat as a board. It has it's charm, to be sure, and is lots of fun to drive (i think pretty much anywhere i can drive at my limit is fun), but now my horizons a have been widened considerably.

Virginia International Raceway is a 3.2 mile road course near Danville, VA, just a beercan throw from North Carolina. It's simply gorgeous. The grass, tress and such are nice enough that you could refer to them as "the grounds" and people wouldn't look at you like you were a haughty jerk . The track is a winding ribbon of smooth asphalt that dances through the hilly terrain in a very three-dimensional way, one series of corners goes by the name "roller coaster" for good reason. Course workers are stationed all over the track, which is very important on a track with so many blind corners and hills. This event was almost a combination Honda-Tech meet and Track event, so i'm going to split this into two pages...you'll get to the links soon enough.

Many thanks to George Knighton at Honda-Tech for getting HT members a great deal, and for dealing with all the paperwork and time it took to get everything in order. Secondly, thanks to Jon Felton and the rest of the Speedtrial crew for a fantastic event, everything went exceptionally well, incidents and delays were handled professionally, I can't think of a single negative aspect to the weekend. Thanks to Warren, my instructor, who taught me more in a single weekend than I have learned in the past 9 years of driving (jeez has it been that long?) And finally, thanks to Virginia International Raceway for being an amazing strip of asphalt on some remarkable topography.
