Glovebox Fix

For some reason, a majority of Type R owners are plagued by the "glovebox problem". Under hard acceleration, particularly a drag launch, the glovebox flies open, often distributing its contents onto the passenger seat, or hitting the passenger in the knees. I guess, despite all the things Honda got right on the Type R, they forgot to upgrade the glovebox to deal with the increased horsepower. Theoretically, this is an adjustable latch, and I've gotten it to work pretty well sometimes, but inevitably it starts flying open again after a while. Well, I was really fed up, so I decided to see what made the latching mechanism tick, and more importantly, see if anything could be changed to make it stay the hell shut.

I think I found something that's quite easy to do, and it seems to work. Take out your glovebox, and remove the lock and handle mechanism. Take a look at the back, and you will see this:

This is the latching mechanism, in the closed and unlocked position.

Bend the tab (circled in red) outwards, so that it can clear the ridge (circled in green) when the handle is being pulled outward.

Now, you can lock the glovebox....

Pull the handle to the open position while the glovebox is locked...

...and unlock while the handle is being held open, which allows the locking level to slide UNDER the opening pin, helping to hold it in the closed position.

Here's another look at box in the previously unattainable unlocked-open position.

When everything is reinstalled, you stick the key in, lock the box, pull the handle, and unlock the box. The handle will remain in the "out" position, but this added resistance seems to have cured mine. Your mileage may vary, but if you want it back to normal, just bend the tab back...quick, easy, and it seems to work. Lemme know if it works for you!
